when i embarked on a euro-tour some three months ago, i could not possibly have imagined the loss and simultaneous growth that life had planned for me.

when i say loss, i refer to both the physical and theoretical sense.

within 24 hours of arriving in england, my grandma began her descent to death-a concept i had never had the misfortune of experiencing. ultimately, losing her gave me a new appreciation for the priviledge of being here today and opened my eyes to many fortunes i had, previously, overlooked.

losing someone [i'm sure] is never easy, however, as a career-teacher my gran had always made a point of teaching us at any given opportunity. from her death-bed she raised my awareness to the beauty that life offers us on a daily basis.

i choose to view the subsequent time i spent in barcelona as a parallel to the life i have known in ottawa, as the things that bring us comfort from one day to the next can be found regardless of geographical location.

music. while many have varying ideas of what constitutes the term, i have always enjoyed the individuals right to embrace the notion as they see it.

and with said priviledge i indulged in the wave of nu-disco that had swept the continents of europe. mainly due to my roommates appreciation of the genre, i found it a great escape-a means of living, laughing and loving from a dancefloor. and for those who are unfamiliar or who require a new file to infiltrate their collection, feel free to check out his mix here!

and while many other genres helped me connect and indulge in my repreciation for life through music, there really is nothing better than a sense of pride when friends find success through something that, not only are they good at, but also brings them obvious pleasure. with that said, a tribe called red's [a hometown favourite of mine] new! album drop offered both comfort and continual excitement.

all things considered, at times, i wish i could change the course of events that have unfolded, but i know i can't. and since i can't undo what is done, i pledge to simply get through it the best way i know how--with my speakers turned up.

i hope these tunes find you well and offer an enjoyment paralleled by none other than my own!

callie.

Excited to get it out there he decided to put that energy into constructing a lil promo video for one of the songs. This was done in one take using one continuous shot and edited on imovie with some youtube crash courses for various layering effects.

"It all started sometime last spring during late night recording sessions trying to come up with something capture the public's attention", says Atherton, a stalwart on the Ottawa hip-hop scene since 2003. "Tim Hortons is my fuel during such attempts and after several hours of writing and getting nowhere it dawned on my the answer was there right under my nose, and slightly above my lower lip." Thus the song "1 in 6" was born, eluding to the new odds of winning Tim Hortons' annual Roll Up The Rim To Win contest.

Within days of posting it to the music site Soundcloud, director Kevin Friel was on the line with plans to shoot a video. That video went on to become a finalist in the 2011 Ottawa International Film Fest Music Video Challenge. The two decided to wait until the 2012 contest to release it publicly.

"Roll Up the Rim has become a latter-day Canadian icon, " Atherton says. "I figured it deserved its own anthem."
